Listening to the Forest, Protecting Its Future
Listening to the Forest, Protecting Its Future
At Macaw Lodge, conservation is not just about what we see—it’s also about what we hear. The forest is alive with stories, carried through the songs of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the rhythmic calls of frogs. Sound is a window into the health of an ecosystem, and we are harnessing its power to deepen our connection with nature while advancing scientific research.
We’re excited to share a unique project that brings the living sounds of our sanctuary to spaces around the world. Through a partnership with Oda, we’ve installed high-quality microphones that stream the daily symphony of our forest—from the dawn chorus to the evening’s frog songs—in real time.
These sounds reach listeners through Oda’s remarkable installations—sculptural pieces crafted from paper and fabric that float like mobiles in space. Their resonant forms allow sound to flow naturally, like opening a window to our sanctuary. Each installation is handcrafted in Oda’s New York workshop, using sustainable materials that echo our commitment to environmental responsibility. When the morning birds or evening frogs sing through these delicate forms, the effect is both beautiful and profound—creating a physical presence of our sanctuary in distant spaces.
But this is more than just sharing beautiful sounds. Through bioacoustics, we are using technology to better understand and protect our environment. The data collected from these recordings helps scientists monitor ecosystem health, detect changes in biodiversity, and strengthen conservation strategies. Every time a Macaw’s call is heard through one of these installations, it is a testament to the success of reforestation and species restoration efforts.
This initiative is also part of Oda’s “Fair Trade Sound”, ensuring that every installation carrying our forest’s voice directly supports our conservation work and the local community. Every sound shared helps sustain this sanctuary and the people dedicated to its protection.
This collaboration represents a new way of thinking about conservation—creating direct, living connections between protected places and the people who support them. Somewhere in the world, someone wakes up to our dawn chorus, forming a bond with a place they might never visit but can help preserve.
Join us in this journey. Listen. Protect. Connect.
